Ghana Africa's Land of Gold
Day 1 Departure New York on British Airways in the early evening.
Day 2 Arrive Accra, Ghana via London in the later afternoon. You will be met by our local representatives and transferred to the Miklin Hotel for overnight.
Day 3 After breakfast, take a conducted
tour of the National Museum for the viewing of a collection of Ghanaian relics. Visit the
31st December Makola Market, the biggest traditional market, where purchasing transactions
are done through bargaining. Experience the color and beauty of the market and the
hospitality of the Ghanaian Women.
Depart for the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Ghana's latest most
magnificent attraction, with the tomb of the country's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame
Nkrumah. The first president is known as the man who spearheaded the course of Pan
Africanism.
Round off the morning with a visit to the National Center for Culture
and the main craft bazaar of Accra, where guests can view wood sculptors and other
craftsmen at work. (B)
Day 4 After breakfast depart for Cape Coast and the city of
Elmina. The two hour drive takes you past splendid beaches, quaint fishing villages, open air markets, former trading posts, forts and castles. Upon arrival check into your beach front hotel the Coconut Grove Beach. After lunch take at tour of the World Heritage designated Elmina Castle. Prior to touring the castle you will have a brief slide presentation and lecture on the history of the castle. The tour will include the officers quarters, the salve dungeons, the auction market and the Portuguese church.
Day 5 Tour to Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.
After breakfast, depart for Ghana's largest city, Kumasi, the mention of which conjures up
the splendid and powerful Ashanti Kings. In route to Kumasi, stop at the historic Kente
Weaving Village of Bonwire. Perhaps you may try your hand at weaving or just browse for
souvenirs. Check into the hotel, then visits the Cultural Center where beautiful works of
art in sculpture, gold, jewelry and ornaments are on display. Then a guided tour of the
Court Museum i.e., Prempeh II Jubilee Museum, where history comes to life in the
photographs and artifacts of Ashanti Royalty. Stay overnight in Kumasi. (B)
Day 6 - Morning tour to Ahwiaa famous for its
fertility dolls and Ashanti Stools. Witness the carvers, who, in a few minutes turn a
piece of wood into a beautiful stool or fertility doll. The next stop is the village of
Ntonso, which produces the hand-printed fabric called the Adinkra Cloth. An afternoon tour
to the Kejetia Central Market. This is the largest market in West Africa. You will have
time to shop, bargain and interact with local people. Stay overnight in Kumasi. (B)
Day 7 Return to Accra in the early afternoon. Enjoy a farewell dinner in Accra before returning to the airport for your late evening return flight on British Airways.
Day 8 Arrive New York late morning.
